Application Process

In natural gas gathering systems, large volumes of gas are transported through pipelines to gas processing facilities. Before entering downstream treatment units, the removal of solid contaminants and residual liquids from the inlet gas stream is a critical first step.

Inlet gas separation protects downstream equipment by preventing solids and entrained liquids from entering sensitive processes such as gas sweetening and dehydration, ensuring stable and reliable system operation.

Key Challenges

Natural gas streams often contain a wide range of suspended contaminants, including:

  • Iron oxides and iron sulfides
  • Dust and pipeline debris
  • Large quantities of deformable particles

If not effectively removed, these contaminants can be carried into downstream processing units, resulting in:

  • Fouling and damage to amine sweetening systems
  • Reduced efficiency of dehydration units
  • Increased maintenance frequency and unplanned downtime

Effective inlet gas filtration is therefore essential to maintain system integrity and protect critical process units.

Filtration Solutions

Cartridge filtration systems are commonly installed upstream of gas-liquid coalescers or integrated into multi-stage separation systems. These systems are designed to:

  • Remove solid and deformable particles from the gas stream
  • Protect downstream coalescing and separation equipment
  • Extend the service life of gas-liquid separators
  • Maintain stable operating conditions for downstream processes

By controlling particulate contamination at the inlet stage, filtration systems play a key role in stabilizing overall gas processing performance.

Operational Benefits

  • Process Stability: Reduced fluctuations and improved system control
  • Equipment Protection: Prevention of fouling and damage to downstream units
  • Maintenance Reduction: Lower replacement frequency of coalescers and separation elements
  • Reliability: Improved performance of gas sweetening and dehydration systems

Typical Installation Locations

  • Upstream of gas-liquid coalescers
  • Integrated within multi-stage separation skids
  • Natural gas gathering and processing facilities

Recommended Filtration Technologies

  • Cartridge filtration systems for solid and deformable particle removal
  • High-capacity gas filter housings
  • Configurations suitable for retrofit or integration into existing systems

CMI filtration solutions can be supplied as complete skid-mounted systems or as replacement elements compatible with major gas processing equipment manufacturers.
