Process Overview

Completion fluids and workover fluids are used in oil and gas operations before and during well completion, as well as throughout the production lifecycle for well intervention and repair. These fluids are introduced directly into the wellbore and come into contact with the producing formation.

Completion and workover fluids are primarily used to clean the wellbore, remove drilling cuttings, mud filter cake, and cement residues, and control solids and sand during well intervention. Because these fluids interact directly with the producing zone, fluid cleanliness is critical to prevent formation damage and maintain reservoir performance.

Completion Fluid Filtration for Oil and Gas Applications

The role of filtration is to remove contaminants from the fluid, allowing clean fluid to be reintroduced into the well without risking blockage or damage to the reservoir.

Causes of Formation Damage Related to Well Fluids

Formation damage is often caused by inadequate control of solids present in fluids that contact the producing zone. Key contributors include:

  • Unfiltered or poorly filtered well fluids entering the reservoir
  • Fine particles migrating into pore spaces and blocking flow paths
  • Accumulation of solids reducing formation permeability
  • Progressive decline in well productivity

All fluids that contact the producing formation must be properly filtered, including:

  • Drilling fluids
  • Drill-out fluids
  • Completion fluids
  • Workover fluids
  • Reaming and cleanout fluids

Even small quantities of fine solids can significantly reduce reservoir permeability and negatively impact well performance.

Engineering Requirements for Completion and Workover Fluid Filtration

  • Effective removal of fine solids to protect formation permeability
  • Consistent and reliable filtration performance
  • Compatibility with a wide range of fluid chemistries
  • Stable operation under variable flow conditions

While an ideal system would eliminate all solid particles, in practical field operations the widely accepted target is removal of particles 5 μm and larger.

Benefits of Effective Completion Fluid Filtration

  • Formation Protection: Prevents plugging and formation damage
  • Reservoir Performance: Maintains permeability and flow capacity
  • Production Stability: Supports higher and more consistent production rates
  • Extended Well Life: Reduces decline caused by solids damage
  • Cost Reduction: Minimizes need for remediation and workover operations

Filtration Strategy for Completion and Workover Fluids

Fine Filtration

  • Filtration Rating: Typically 5 μm or finer
  • Requirement: Stable pressure drop and consistent particle retention
  • Objective: Protect reservoir permeability and prevent pore blockage

Pre-Filtration for Solids Load Reduction

To extend the service life of high-efficiency filter elements, upstream pre-filtration is strongly recommended.

  • Settling tanks for bulk solids removal
  • Shale shakers or vibrating screens for large debris
  • Centrifugal separators (hydrocyclones)
  • Other coarse separation equipment

Reducing solids loading before fine filtration significantly improves system reliability and operating efficiency.

Typical Applications

  • Well completion operations
  • Workover and intervention projects
  • Drill-out and cleanout processes
  • Sand control and production stabilization
