Process Overview

Hot water washing, also referred to as flood-type hot water rinsing, is an important initial stage in automotive pretreatment processes. During this step, a large volume of heated water is flushed through the vehicle body—typically entering through the windshield opening—to remove internal contaminants such as iron chips, welding slag, dust, and debris.

In addition to mechanical cleaning, hot water washing helps activate and soften oil residues, improving the effectiveness of subsequent degreasing stages.

A typical automotive pretreatment process includes:

  • Hot water washing
  • Pre-degreasing
  • Main degreasing
  • Water rinsing
  • Surface conditioning
  • Phosphating

Hot water washing usually uses tap water heated to approximately 40–70 °C, allowing the majority of coarse contaminants to be removed before entering chemical treatment stages. This significantly reduces the contaminant load on downstream degreasing baths.

Hot Water Wash Filtration System

Challenges in Hot Water Wash Systems

  • Suspended solids, iron particles, and oil residues may clog spray nozzles
  • Contaminants accumulate in the circulating hot water, degrading cleaning performance
  • Frequent water replacement is required due to increasing contamination levels
  • Elevated operating costs caused by water consumption and energy loss

Without effective filtration and separation, system stability and pretreatment efficiency are difficult to maintain.

Engineering Objectives of Hot Water Wash Filtration

  • Remove coarse solids and iron particles from circulating water
  • Separate oil contaminants from the water phase
  • Protect spray nozzles and piping from blockage
  • Reduce water replacement frequency
  • Improve overall pretreatment system efficiency

Filtration reliability and tolerance to heavy contamination are key requirements at this stage.
